A 17-year-old remains in a critical condition in hospital following a car crash in Limerick city last night.
The car had failed to stop when gardaí signalled to do so.
The incident is being investigated by the Garda Ombudsman's office.
The incident in which the young man was seriously injured happened between 11pm and midnight.
A garda patrol car on its way to an incident in the Raheen area of the city noticed the movements of a car, now believed to have been stolen, being driven by a young man.
It went through a red light at speed at the Punches Cross junction on the southside of the city.
The gardaí activated their blue light and siren and signalled the driver to stop.
The car took off at speed, went out of control and turned over ending up on its roof on a footpath a short distance away.
It struck two other cars - two women in one of those cars had to be treated for injuries in hospital.
The occupants of a third car were uninjured.
An ambulance which was in the area at the time also had to take evasive action to avoid being involved in the collision.
The ambulance personnel and the two gardaí in the patrol car were treated in hospital for shock, but were released from the emergency department after a short time.
The Garda Ombudsman’s office was informed and is carrying out an investigation today.
The gardaí involved and senior gardaí are helping them with that investigation.
