The Minister for Communications has said it would be appropriate for RTÉ to look at the wages it pay its workers in light of the fact that the broadcaster is projecting a €30m deficit for this year.

Pat Rabbitte was responding in the Dáil to Fianna Fáil's Éamon Ó Cuív who asked if there was any way of finding out of if any of the licence fee money went to pay 'inflated salaries and fees' of some RTÉ workers.

Mr Ó Cuív said licence fee payers would be 'upset' if this was the case.

Mr Rabbitte said he has met management of the station to seek assurances that the quality of output would not suffer as a result of financial constraints.

The Minister also said that RTÉ does a good job particularly in the area of public affairs but described some of the imported programmes as 'pap' and pretty terrible.

He said the broadcaster does produce quality programmes, but perhaps not enough.
