Fianna Fáil will hold a parliamentary party meeting next week to decide whether or not to run a candidate in the presidential election.
Senator Darragh O'Brien has said that Fianna Fáil was not concerned that its candidate would face a tougher election than others.
Darragh O'Brien has said that there were many people within his party who had the talent and the ability to represent the country well.
He ruled himself out of the race and said personally, he would be looking 'outside the Oireachtas' for the party's nomination.
He said presidential elections should not be overly political.
He agreed that Bertie Ahern's hopes and aspirations for presidency were now dead in the water.
He said his party had to look forward and should not be looking back.
On Sean Gallagher's presidential bid, Senator O'Brien said Mr Gallagher would make an excellent president and added that his track record as an entrepreneur would add something very different to the presidency.
He said personally, he would be quite supportive of Sean Gallagher.
