Nigeria has postponed parliamentary and presidential elections by a week after failing to get logistical preparations in place in time, in a major embarrassment to the country's electoral commission.

Africa's most populous nation will now hold parliamentary elections on 9 April , presidential elections on 16 April and governorship elections in its 36 states on 26 April.

The parliament vote had been set for Monday, presidential elections were due on 9 April and state ballots were to take place on 16 April.

Parliamentary polls had already been delayed once from Saturday amid widespread organisational problems.
