The first confirmed basking shark sighting of the year has been reported to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group.
The sighting of the planet's second largest shark and fish species was made this morning about 2.5km off Slea Head in Co Kerry.
The arrival of basking sharks into inshore waters as early as March, or even February, has been documented now in six of the past eight years.
In 2010, there were 200 recorded sightings.
