Just over €1.5m has been spent by the State on investigating the circumstances surrounding the Stardust fire and counselling services in recent years.

The independent examination of the Stardust Victims Committee's case for a reopened inquiry, which was published in 2009, cost €943,858.

A further €424,300 was provided by the Department of Justice to cover the legal, expert and other costs of participation by the committee.

In line with a recommendation included in the report which was carried out by Paul Coffey SC, the Department is paying the costs of counselling services for a small number of survivors.

At the end of 2010, that totalled €12,978.

The costs of exhuming and identifying five previously unidentified victims of the tragedy cost a further €177,820.

The information was contained in an answer to a recent Parliamentary Question from Finian McGrath.
