A public inquiry has found that 31 people died as a result of an outbreak of Clostridium Difficile in Northern Trust hospitals between June 2007 and August 2008.

It found that the hospital superbug was the underlying cause in 15 deaths and a contributory cause in 16.

The investigation was ordered by Northern Ireland Health Minister Michael McGimpsey and began in March 2009.

The inquiry has issued 12 recommendations - including that patients should, where possible, be cared for in single rooms and that those who contract the superbug should be told of the diagnosis.
