Taoiseach Enda Kenny held an eight-minute phone conversation with US President Barack Obama this afternoon while in Brussels.
According to a Government spokesman, President Obama congratulated Mr Kenny on his election victory and wished him success in the future.
It is understood the Taoiseach reminded Mr Obama that he had been in Denver on the night of his nomination as a US presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in 2008.
The spokesman said Mr Obama spoke of the high number of Irish staff currently working in the White House.
He ‘personally’ invited Mr Kenny to the White House for St Patrick's Day celebrations, while the Taoiseach said there was a standing invitation to President Obama to visit Ireland.
Mr Kenny took the phone call, which had been scheduled, during a discussion among EU leaders about the situation in Libya.
