Fires burn in the city of Natori

Japan has awoken to devastation along its northeastern coast, with fires raging in many cities, parts of others still underwater and serious concerns about two nuclear reactors in the worst hit area.

At least 1,000 people are known to have died in the massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake the tsunami that followed.

The US Geological Survey says the initial quake caused a rupture in the Earth’s crust 150 miles long and 50 miles wide – dozens of strong aftershocks were felt in the hours that followed.

Updates 0900-2359

2359 The earthquake has sparked at least 80 fires in cities and towns along the coast of Japan.

Car manufacturing plants, electronics factories and refineries have been shut, many roads are buckled and power to millions of homes and businesses has been knocked out.

Several airports, including Tokyo's Narita, have been closed and much of the nation's rail services halted. All ports remain shut.

2359 A total of 45,000 people living within a 10km radius of the Fukushima facilities have been told to leave the area under an evacuation order.

2358 The two reactors at Fukushima - Fukushima No1 (Daiichi plant) and Fukushima No 2 (Daini plant) - are located around 240km north of Tokyo.

Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) has confirmed it has lost the ability to control the pressure in some of the reactors at both plants.

Gas is due to be vented at Fukushima No 1 shortly to ease the pressure there.

'The situation is still several stages away from Three Mile Island when the reactor container ceased to function as it should,' stressed Tomoko Murakami, leader of the nuclear energy group at Japan's Institute of Energy Economics.

Japan informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the quake and tsunami had cut the supply of off-site power to the plant and the diesel generators intended to provide back-up electricity to the cooling system.

2357 Jiji news agency is reporting that a ship, thought to have been lost in the tsunami, has been found. All 81 people on board are being airlifted to safety.

2347 NHK now reporting that Tokyo Electric Power has warned the Japanese government that 'equipment failures are making it impossible' to cool three of the four nuclear reactors (reactors 1,2 & 4) at the second Fukushima nuclear plant (Fukushima No 2).

2341 Readings from an observatory in Miyagi prefecture show it is now located four metres further east than it was before the earthquake.

2331 The Japanese government has ordered Tokyo Electric Power to vent gases from the Fukushima No 1 plant to release the pressure and avoid damaging the facility.

2320 In the capital Tokyo, many residents have spent the night in offices and train stations after public transport was shut down.

80,000 people spent the night in temporary shelters.

Some subways in Tokyo are resuming operation this morning, but many trains still not running and many highways are closed.

2301 Tokyo Electric Power says it has lost the ability to control pressure in some of the reactors of a second nuclear power plant at its quake-hit Fukushima facility.

'Pressure is stable inside the reactors but rising in the containment vessels,' a spokesman said.

He said he did not know if there would be a need to release pressure at the plant at this point - this would involve a release of radiation.

2231 It has been reported that 'an emergency situation' has now been declared at Fukushima No 2 plant - in addition to the ongoing cooling problems at Fukushima No 1 plant.

NHK says that in both cases small amounts of radioactive material may be vented into the air to ease the pressure - 'it is hoped that this will not affect human beings in a serious manner,' says the Japanese Nuclear Safety agency.

2229 Japanese TV saying up to 13,000 people were stranded in Tokyo's Narita Airport overnight.

2219 NHK, quoting nuclear safety officials, says there is 'no immediate health hazard' to residents from the small radiation leak at Fukushima.

People are being urged to evacuate the area calmly.

The elevated radiation reading was taken in the control room of the No 1 reactor of the Fukushima plant.

2211 'Every indication is that the type of event that has occurred there (Fukushima) is one of the most serious things that can happen in a nuclear reactor.' Nuclear expert Edwin Lyman has told Reuters.

2147 AFP is reporting that radiation levels are now 1,000 times above normal at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Meanwhile, the US military now says it did not provide any coolant for the reactor, as had previously been reported.

2049 The separate 6.7 magnitude (revised upwards) earthquake in Niigata prefecture a few hours ago is understood to have caused landslides and avalanches in the region.

Kyodo News said there were no immediate reports of casualties after the quake, which was followed by an almost equally strong quake in the same area half an hour later.

The quakes struck in the west of the main Honshu island, on the Sea of Japan coast and far from the offshore Pacific Ocean tremor.

The US Geological Survey said the latest earthquakes hit at a depth of only one kilometre.

Police said they had received reports of a landslide and avalanche in Tokamachi and another avalanche in Tsunan town.

2015 Pressure in the Fukushima nuclear plant has risen to 1.5 times the designed capacity, says the Japan Nuclear Safety agency.

Radioactive gas building up inside the plant is set to be released soon.

'It's possible that radioactive material in the reactor vessel could leak outside but the amount is expected to be small and the wind blowing towards the sea will be considered,' Chief Cabinet Yukio Edano told a news conference a short time ago.

2000 Pope Benedict XVI has said he was ‘deeply saddened’ by the events in Japan.

Tokyo Electric Power Co said pressure inside a reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi plant rose after the cooling system was knocked out by the earthquake.

Kyodo news agency quoted the company as saying that the radiation level was rising in the turbine building and the pressure had risen to 1.5 times the designed capacity.

Experts say there could be leakage if water levels in the Fukushima reactor fell and the temperature of the nuclear rods rose, though this might not happen immediately.

'Even if fuel rods are exposed, it does not mean they would start melting right away,' said Tomoko Murakami, leader of the nuclear energy group at Japan's Institute of Energy Economics.

Hawaii and parts of the US West Coast were placed under a tsunami warning after a 8.9-magnitude quake hit Japan, the largest ever recorded in the Asian nation's history.

The quake triggered a huge tsunami that slammed parts of the Japanese coastline.

1510 Millions of Japanese citizens learned about today’s massive earthquake about one minute before they could feel its violent shockwaves, thanks to an early-warning system.

The sophisticated system is connected to network of about 1,000 seismometers around the country which detect and analyse primary waves of quakes and issue warnings if the tremors are predicted to be powerful.

Primary waves travel faster than secondary waves, which are much more destructive - meaning that alarms about quakes can arrive moments before the earth starts to shake, just enough time to take cover.
