JobFit hoping to avoid closure

Staff and participants in a nationwide training programme which has already helped hundreds of people to find jobs are hoping the incoming government will save it from closure this month.

Since last summer, 1,700 people have received training at 11 JobFit centres across the country.

337 people have been placed in jobs, while 916 have gained FETAC qualifications and 135 others are in further education.

The JobFit initiative, which is delivered by Rehab and funded through the Labour Market Activation Fund of the Department of Education and Skills, is due to end this month when the fixed-term contract runs out.

A spokesman for the department has confirmed that no additional funding will be provided for a programme which had ‘a short-term delivery horizon’.

But JobFit staff, who are now also facing unemployment, claim the programme is delivering results and has proven that it can change peoples lives.
