The Irish National Teachers' Organisation has decided to oppose a Government work placement programme which would see unemployed teachers working for free in schools.

At a special conference today, members of the union voted overwhelmingly to oppose the scheme, against the wishes of their union executive.

The union is now to issue a directive to all members telling them not to cooperate with the scheme.
