Labour leader Eamon Gimore said that his party differed from Fine Gael on a number of fronts, including the terms of the EU/IMF deal.

Mr Gilmore's comments came as he launched his party's election campaign and in response to remarks from Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin.

Mr Martin said the two parties had put forward 'false promises' about the debt renegotiations.

Mr Gilmore said the differences between the two parties were real and would be for the people to decide on in an election.

He said the EU/IMF deal would cripple the country and there was no alternative to changing it.

Mr Gilmore said the party would be committing to no increase in income tax rates for those earning less than €100,000 when it launches its economic plans tomorrow.

He said the party would be seeking some 18,000 reductions in public service numbers to be secured on a voluntary basis, insisting that those who wanted a higher figures and compulsory redundancies were wrong.

Mr Gilmore claimed only Labour could lead the change the country needed with its vision of one Ireland.

Labour says its election campaign is focused on jobs, reform and fairness.

The party is running 68 candidates across the 43 constituencies. The party leader is travelling to Carlow and Kilkenny this afternoon to campaign with labour candidates.
