The Irish Farmers' Association has called on all political parties to support and invest in farming, saying it will generate increased economic activity and stimulate growth in exports and jobs.

Launching its General Election submission in Dublin, the IFA said official growth targets for farming can only be achieved if the next Government pursues policies that provide the right framework for agriculture.

The IFA says that if food exports are to continue to increase, all financial supports for farmers must be safeguarded to encourage sustainable production.

It also wants tax reliefs and other incentives to remain in place.

IFA President John Bryan said escalating input costs are a real worry for the sector and the new government must address the country's competitiveness.

He said there must be no further increase in the carbon tax, as this would cause more damage to the exporting, farming and food sector.
