Around 2,000 people attended a meeting in Co Roscommon this evening to highlight opposition to a ban on turf cutting.

The organisers of the meeting were trying to get commitments from political parties ahead of the election to reverse the ban.

Turf cutting was banned on 32 bogs in Ireland last year as part of a Government and EU conservation measure.

At the meeting, turf cutters and contractors said they would continue to cut turf despite the ban and appealed for Government action to avoid any confrontation on the issue.
