Prisoners injured in Mountjoy fire

Five prisoners at Mountjoy Prison have been taken to hospital following a fire in the prison.

The fire, which is believed to have been started deliberately, broke out just after 8pm in a cell in the basement

Prison officers wearing breathing apparatus rescued the inmates who were then taken to the Mater Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The gardaí and the Irish Prison Service have begun investigations.
