A spokesman for the National Roads Authority has said that it believes that motorists are being overcharged at a number of toll plazas around the country.
Sean O'Neill said that NRA by-laws state that if the consumer price index falls for a 12-month period that the operators of the toll plazas are also required to reduce their charges.
He said that the NRA had asked five toll operators to reduce their charges for 2011, but that only one operator has done so.
Mr O’Neill added that those toll operators that have not reduced the toll rates have put forward a different interpretation of the toll by-laws to that of the NRA
He said that the NRA will now be seeking legal clarity on the matter in the courts.
