Superquinn has announced that it is closing its store in Naas, Co Kildare, where 110 workers are employed.
The Mandate union says Superquinn has given employees 30 days’ notice, with the store set to close on 4 February.
It is hoped that some employees will be redeployed to other shops.
Mandate will hold a meeting with its members at the store at 10.30am tomorrow morning.
Superquinn said the closure is due to the expiry of the lease on the property.
‘This regrettable decision arises due to the expiry of the lease on the premises and the landlord's wish to take possession of the store.
‘Superquinn had intended to open a store on an alternative site in Naas prior to the expiry of the current lease but, as a result of current problems in the property market, development of this site is on hold for the time being.'
A 30-day consultation period will now commence between the company and its employees and with their trade unions.
Superquinn said it would be offering affected workers redeployment within the company where possible.
Gerry Light, Mandate's Assistant General Secretary, said the workers were 'shocked and disappointed' by the news, especially as the store was 'trading very well'.
'The workers in Superquinn Naas are obviously very concerned for their jobs at a time of such high unemployment, so we in Mandate will be entering into intensive negotiations with the company over the coming days to secure the best possible outcome for our members,' Mr Light said in a statement.
