Cyclists will for the first time be allowed to bring their bikes on off-peak DART and commuter services following the launch of two initiatives by Iarnród Éireann.

As part of the plans, bikes may be carried free of charge on to DART and Dublin and Cork commuter services between 10am and 3.30pm, and after 7pm, Monday to Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday (except times of major events in the Aviva Stadium or Croke Park).

Intercity travellers will be able to book spaces for their bicycles at a cost of €6 per journey.

Minister of State for Sustainable Transport Ciarán Cuffe welcomed the plans, saying: ‘Enabling cyclists to take bikes on off-peak Darts and commuter trains is another positive step toward building a strong cycling culture in Ireland.’

An Iarnród Éireann spokesman said: ‘As well as supporting national policy on developing cycling, [the announcement] is also very much a business opportunity for us, with the numbers of people cycling on the rise.’

Iarnród Éireann also announced that it had undertaken an audit of bicycle parking facilities at its 142 stations around Ireland.

This will allow improvements in facilities to be targeted at areas underserved at present, the company said, and improve the accessibility of stations for cyclists, and further encourage the development of cycling.
