Independent TD Joe Behan has confirmed that he will support the Government in the crucial Dáil vote on Wednesday on the €85bn EU/IMF rescue deal for Ireland.
Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Mr Behan said the situation would be disastrous if the vote was not carried.
He said that he was very sceptical about Opposition claims that, if in power, they could get a better deal and a lower interest rate in new negotiations with the IMF.
Fine Gael said it will vote against the rescue package when it comes before the Dáil for a vote on Wednesday.
Leo Varadkar said his party would try to renegotiate the IMF agreement if it formed the next Government and try to have the interest rate lowered.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Drivetime, Mr Varadkar said Ireland's case may be helped if the economic situation in Europe could improve in the medium to long term.
On RTÉ's This Week yesterday, the party's Deputy Finance Spokesman Brian Hayes said his party disagreed with the terms of the package.
At the weekend, Government Chief Whip John Curran called on Fine Gael to act in the national interest by backing the Dáil vote on the rescue package.
