Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said failures to regulate the banking system here played a major part in Ireland's current economic crisis.

Mr Brown said the regulator and the Government should have done more to prevent Irish banks requiring billions of euro in state support.

He did however concede that it was difficult to identify the exposures of the banks due to the international nature of their business.

Mr Brown was speaking on last night's The Late Late Show on RTÉ television.
