Dublin City Council has announced that overnight water restrictions are to continue for another three nights.

The council said that three nights of restrictions introduced last Tuesday have stabilised supply.

However, water levels are still below what is needed coming into the holiday period and anticipated high demand in January and February.

The council added that three more nights of restrictions will reduce the risk of more severe measures to maintain water supply.

The position will be reviewed on Monday.

In Co Westmeath water restrictions are also in place.

Supplies ran low after some householders left taps on to prevent their pipes from freezing during the cold spell.

The council has also implemented a four-day work programme to augment its current effort to mechanically remove compacted ice from roads, footpaths and pedestrian streets from the city centre and suburban villages.

Elsewhere, snow and ice clearing operations began on the M9 motorway in Co Kildare this morning, leading to delays for motorists.

Most areas from Junction 2 to Junction 4 have now been cleared, but further works are required northbound and will continue until this evening.

In Wicklow, the mountain rescue services have issued a renewed warning regarding road conditions in the Sally Gap and similar mountainous areas in the Dublin and Wicklow area.

Melt water, which has formed underneath the sheets of ice and decayed snow in such areas, has led to extremely dangerous road conditions, which pose a very serious safety risk to any motorist attempting to travel via these routes.

Even well equipped 4x4 vehicles and experienced drivers should avoid the area as a consequence.

Meanwhile, Bus Éireann says that most of its services are operating normally, but there is some disruption in the northeast and east.
