Motorists and pedestrians are being urged to remain cautious as a general thaw sets in around the country.

Compacted ice remains a problem on side roads and pavements and Met Éireann says it will take days to melt.

Today main roads were clear in urban areas, but ice was reported on national routes in the midlands.

Many schools around the country remain closed for another day.

Water supply is continuing to be a source of concern to local authorities, as the gradual thaw will mean more burst water pipes.

Dublin councils will be continuing their water restrictions tonight and Wicklow will also be imposing restrictions in some areas.

Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann are operating full services but there are delays and curtailments on some routes, particularly in the east and northeast.

DART and Luas services in Dublin are all running but with some delays. The Luas stop at Connolly Station remains closed.

Dublin and Shannon airport are fully operational but passengers are asked to consult their airline's website before travelling to the airports.

Meanwhile, Wicklow Mountain Rescue Volunteers have for the second time in a week had to rescue drivers of 4x4 vehicles who tried to drive through the Sally Gap for fun. They have appealed to such drivers to stay away.

Temperatures will rise over the next few days, but there could be a return to freezing conditions again next week.
