The Director General of FÁS has said there will be 100 less staff working for the organisation by the end of the year.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee, Paul O'Toole said 320 staff left the training agency in 2009.

He said he expects the total number of people working for FÁS to stand at 1,950 by the end of 2010.

Mr O’Toole told the committee that €41m was paid in overhead costs in 2009 compared to €53m in 2008.

He added that there has been a serious period of change for the organisation since 2009 and said the board takes reform very seriously to provide a solid foundation for the future.

Officials from the Department of Education and Skills have said FÁS will be in a position to draw down money from the European Social Fund from early next year.

They said the European Commission had concerns over past claims because they included projected rather than actual training costs.

It means €45m that would have been drawn down in 2009 and 2010 will now be drawn down in 2011.
