Cement mixer falls on train in Surrey

A number of people have been injured after a cement mixer fell from a bridge on to a passenger train in the English county of Surrey.

The incident happened in Oxshott shortly after 3pm this afternoon.

The service, which was the 3.05pm travelling from Guildford to London Waterloo, is operated by South West Trains.

A spokesman for South West Trains said: ‘The vehicle landed on some of the train's coaches of an eight-coach unit. So far, there are no reports of fatalities though it is believed there are several people injured.’

A spokeswoman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said five people had been taken to hospitals in the area.

Two were being treated for serious injuries and had been taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting, London. One of these is believed to be the lorry driver.

A total of 39 passengers were assessed at the scene but did not need further treatment.

Superintendent Philip Trendall of the British Transport Police, speaking from the scene, said: ‘There was substantial damage to the train, which remained upright during the accident.’

He added: ‘We will provide more details on the injured passengers, some of whom were more seriously injured than others, as soon as we can.’

The lorry crashed through a brick wall on a bridge above the busy commuter line, landing on the roof of the third carriage from the back of the eight-carriage train near Oxshott station.
