Dublin City Council says it needs up to 4,000 more bicycle spaces because of a big increase in cyclists.

The numbers of cyclists has increased by nearly one third over the past five years.

A council report said most of the parking will be provided within workplaces as part of planning permissions but between 3,000 and 4,000 are needed on the street.

The council has provided 25 ‘cyclehoops’ on a pilot basis in the south city which allow bicycles to be locked to securely locked to poles or walls and take up less space than conventional bikes stands.

The Dublin City Council Transport Committee will discuss a city wide rollout of the scheme next Thursday.
