Farmers end demonstration at Ulster Bank

Malahide - IFA stage protest

A six-hour demonstration by farmers at the Malahide branch of Ulster Bank in Co Dublin ended just before 6pm.

The IFA staged the protest because they said 20 vegetable growers are owed €300,000 between them following the placing into receivership of Groomes vegetable supply firm in Balbriggan.

The receiver, Michael McAteer who was appointed by Ulster Bank at the request of the firm, said a new operator is now running the Balbriggan business and the workforce of 45 have kept their jobs. But the receiver said other creditors must be paid ahead of the growers.

However, IFA deputy president IFA Eddie Downey accused the Ulster Bank of running roughshod over the livelihoods of the growers.

He said he was appalled by the way Ulster Bank stood by while the company continued taking in fresh produce from growers that the bank must have known would never be paid for.

Mr Downey said this is another example of the banks looking after themselves and hammering small family businesses.

Farmers also held a protest outside the Ulster Bank branch in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan.
