Labour questions €15bn adjustment figure

Eamon Gilmore - Party would introduce third tax rate
Eamon Gilmore - Party would introduce third tax rate

The Labour leader has said his party accepts the Government will have to make adjustments of more than €7.5bn over the next four years, but it does not accept the Government's latest figure of €15bn.

Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week, Mr Gilmore said the Government had not given his party the figures on which it made its forecast, including a projected rate of growth.

On the issue of possible budget cuts, Mr Gilmore said he would not cut children's allowance but would use the taxation system to make people on higher earnings make a higher contribution.

He said Labour would introduce a third rate of income tax for earnings of over €100,000 a year and eliminate a number of tax benefits, such as property reliefs, rent reliefs, and the top end of pension reliefs.

Mr Gilmore said savings of around €1.4bn on payroll could be achieved over three years if the Croke Park Agreement was worked properly to reform the public service.

He said such reform would include redeployment of staff and a voluntary redundancy scheme to cut staffing by around 15,000.
