Ardee - Shooting incident under investigation

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a man following a shooting and aggravated burglary in Louth.

The man in his mid 20s was arrested in the Dublin area at 5.30pm this evening on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

The incident occurred at 11pm last night when a group of four men from Dublin forced their way into a house on an estate outside Ardee, Co Louth.

There was a fight in which the two men were shot. It is thought that a samurai sword may also have been used in the incident.

The four men fled the house in different directions.

The man who died ran as far as open ground at the front of the estate where he collapsed under a tree.

He had suffered a single shot wound to his upper body. He was in his 20s and from Dublin.

Another man is currently receiving treatment in Beaumont Hospital for a gunshot wound.

It is understood his injuries are not life threatening.

The Deputy State Pathologist Dr Kahlid Jabbar conducted a preliminary post mortem examination at the scene this afternoon.

The body has now been taken to hospital in Dublin where he will conduct a detailed examination to determine the cause of death.

This afternoon the gardaí launched a murder inquiry.

Gardaí have been conducting door to door inquiries in the area.

The scene where the man's body was found and the house where the initial incident took place, remain sealed off as garda technical experts continue their work.

Gardaí are anxious to talk to a taxi driver who carried a male passenger from Ardee travelling in the direction of Dublin shortly after 11pm last night.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or the incident room in Ardee Garda Station on 041-6853222.
