Minister for the Environment and Local Government John Gormley has suggested a car-pool system may have to replace dedicated ministerial cars used by members of the Government and former Taoisigh.
He said that in order to create efficiencies in the current climate nothing can be off limits.
Minister Gormley questioned whether the current system of ministerial transport was necessary and a good use of money.
The minister said there is now a need to create efficiency across the board and look at all areas.
His comments follow Dáil criticism by party colleague Paul Gogarty over the use of ministerial transport prior to Monday's Cabinet meeting in Farmleigh.
