President Mary McAleese began a three-day official visit to Denmark earlier today.

Mary McAleese is using the visit to highlight trade and business opportunities for Irish companies, particularly in the renewable energies and tourism sectors.

Denmark has positioned itself as one of the most advanced renewable energy economies in the world.

President McAleese was to visit the island of Samso where locals have switched from oil and gas consumption to renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar energy and biomass plants.

The President was also to meet Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, and the speaker of the parliament, the Folketing, before attending a dinner hosted by Queen Margrethe II in Copenhagen.

There will be further explorations of Danish-Irish economic potential through Enterprise Ireland, as well as the tourism and agri-food businesses, but President McAleese is also focussing on the centuries-old cultural links between Denmark and Ireland.

She will visit the Sea Stallion of Glendalough in the city of Roskilde.

The boat is a replica Viking ship built in partnership between Ireland and Denmark.
