The commission responsible for finding the ‘Disappeared’ has confirmed that a search for a man who went missing more than 30 years ago will be wound down in the coming days.

The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains says the body of Gerald Evans has not been found during an 18-month search at Carrickrobin, Co Louth.

Mr Evans was 24 years old when he went missing.

He was last seen on the 27 March 1979 on a roadside outside Castleblayney, Co Monaghan.

His family lived in Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, a few doors from the home of Charlie Armstrong.

Mr Armstrong was another of the ‘Disappeared’ who vanished in 1981.

Mr Armstrong's remains were discovered in bogland in Co Monaghan last July. He was buried earlier this month.

In March 1999, the IRA named nine missing people it had abducted and killed. Neither Mr Evans nor Mr Armstrong were on the list.
