Thirteen people have been killed and 19 others were seriously injured when a Polish tourist bus collided with a car on a motorway south of Berlin and crashed into a bridge.

A spokesman for the police in nearby Frankfurt an der Oder said the crash occurred on the A10 motorway not far from Berlin's Schönefeld airport.

Several hundred members of the emergency services including helicopters attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the Polish embassy in Berlin said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived at the scene this evening to visit survivors, having flown in on a special flight.

The bus was carrying tourists returning from Spain.

The woman driver of the car, which collided with the bus, is reported to be in a critical condition.
