A controlled explosion was carried out on a viable improvised device discovered in the Cliona Park estate in Moyross in Limerick.

The device was discovered during a garda search of the area this afternoon.

The army bomb disposal team moved the device to a nearby football pitch to carry out the controlled explosion.

Houses in the area were evacuated but the scene was declared safe at 5pm.
