Rasharkin - Parade delayed until 10.30pm

The start of a loyalist parade in Co Antrim last night was delayed because of a security alert.

A British army bomb disposal team carried out an examination of a suspect device found behind the Orange Hall in Rasharkin at around 7pm.

The device was declared a hoax and the parade eventually started at around 10.30pm.

Rasharkin is one of the places in Northern Ireland where a row about competing rights flares every summer.

Loyalists in the small town seek to stage a bands competition, but nationalists object to the notion of Orange bands marching past their homes.

Scores of PSNI officers are required to police the compromised formula set out by the Parades Commission.

Last night, the situation became more tense after a suspect device was spotted behind a small Orange Hall in the centre of the town.

At one stage, well over 1,000 bandsmen and their supporters gathered on the loyalist side, while the police stood between them and a group of nationalists who had gathered to protest.

Eventually, the bandsmen completed their march.

There were some scuffles between the police and protestors.
