Some 85 TDs and Senators have missed one or more of the 23 Oireachtas Committee meetings since the Dáil went into recess on 8 July.

The figure was compiled following a review of the attendance records by RTÉ News.

Fianna Fáil Mayo TD Beverley Flynn was absent most in the last three weeks - she failed to attend six meetings.

They were four Oireachtas European Affairs meetings and two sessions of the Health Committee.

Other Fianna Fáil TDs to miss three meetings included Darragh O'Brien, Thomas Byrne and Niall Blaney.

Deputy Flynn has so far not commented on her attendance record. Thomas Byrne pointed out that he has been to five other meetings since the Dáil adjourned.

Niall Blaney said he was focusing on constituency work and that the meetings fell on a ‘bad day’ for him.

Darragh O'Brien has not been contactable.

Fine Gael’s Lucinda Creighton missed three meetings of the European Affairs Committee in the last fortnight. But she did send apologies when she had to attend the MacGill Summer School.

The Party’s newly promoted Gaeltacht Spokesperson Frank Feighan also was unable to attend three meetings recently.

Labour Senator Dominic Hannigan missed all four meetings of the committees of which he is a member. He said he had to make a call and decided to focus on other work on the days of the meetings.

Labour’s Joanna Tuffy missed three meetings but attended four others since 8 July. A party spokesman said she shares the Environment portfolio with party colleague Ciaran Lynch, who has a 100% attendance record.

While Independent Senator Ronan Mullen missed four committee meetings, he insisted that he focused on other work in the house on some of the days in question and he was also away for one week.

Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty also missed four meetings.

A spokesperson for the Houses of the Oireachtas said again today that the committees have been extremely active during the Dáil and Seanad recess.

The spokesman added: ‘It is not always possible for every Committee member to attend each meeting for a variety of reasons, such as constituency obligations, party duties and commitments at other forums.’

The next committee meetings are due to take place on 1 September.
