The Government is to spend €296m over the next six years on research at third-level institutions.
The money will be spent funding buildings and also directly on individual research projects.
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation Batt O'Keeffe made the announcement this morning.
Minister O'Keeffe said the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions was the largest investment in research in the history of the State.
An additional €62m has been contributed to match Government funding from private non-Exchequer sources.
Overall the funding announced comprises €260m to be spent on infrastructure and almost €100m to spend directly on research projects.
NUI Galway confirmed that it will receive over €60m from the programme.
NUIG President Dr James J Browne, said: 'I am delighted to welcome this very substantial investment, which is a strong endorsement of NUI Galway's research activities.'
