A new Lord Mayor of Cork has been elected at a meeting of the city council this evening.

Labour's Mick O'Connell took over from Fine Gael's Dara Murphy.

Councillor O'Connell, who represents the city's North West ward, was elected as part of a pact between Labour, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.

He was first elected to Cork City Council in 1999 and says he hopes to secure more jobs and foreign investment for Cork during his term of office.
