The Government is to proceed with the first phase of the revised Limerick regeneration programme.

The Taoiseach has announced that 26 regeneration projects worth €337m will take place over the next four-and-a-half years.

Speaking at the announcement of the approval for the first phase of the revised plan, Brian Cowen said: ‘This Government is about renewal, whether it is economic renewal or renewing some of our most disadvantaged communities.’

‘I consider the regeneration initiative in Limerick to be of the utmost importance, both for the communities and families living in the city, but also as a demonstration of this Government's ability to deliver complex projects across the whole of the public sector,’ he added.

850 new and refurbished social housing units will be completed as part of the scheme.

Two housing projects in Moyross and Ballinacurra Weston will commence this year.

Funding for the first phase of the regeneration plan is to come from the Exchequer, however, the Government is also hoping to attract private investment.

Meanwhile, the Government has also agreed to set up a €5m fund for each of the next five years for training and education initiatives.
