The Army's bomb disposal team has been called out 78 times so far this year.
On 20 of those occasions, an actual explosive device was found, while 23 of the incidents were hoaxes.
The unit was called out 196 times last year.
There were 61 cases involving explosives, 84 were hoaxes, 42 were 'routine' and five were false alarms.
The figures were given by Minister for Defence Tony Killeen who was speaking in front of an Oireachtas committee.
