Threat to libraries in schools abates

Libraries - 22 librarians were set to lose jobs
Libraries - 22 librarians were set to lose jobs

Libraries in some of the country's most disadvantaged schools will continue to operate as normal next year despite a moratorium on hiring staff.

The libraries had been threatened with closure after Minister for Education Mary Coughlan confirmed that the schools' staff librarians were subject to the moratorium on staffing in the public service.

Librarians at 22 of the schools were due to lose their jobs in August.

However, a spokesperson for Ms Coughlan has confirmed that agreement has been reached between the Department of Education and the Department of Finance to maintain the posts.

Schools had argued that the loss of the libraries would have a severe impact on literacy levels among pupils.
