The former Fine Gael Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Peter Barry has been conferred with the Freedom of Cork at a special ceremony in the city.

He joins the ranks of past and present Presidents of Ireland, as well as American presidents Dr Woodrow Wilson and John F Kennedy.

Today was a golden moment for the Barry's tea family as three generations gathered in the Lord Mayor's chamber in Cork's City Hall to celebrate the conferring of the Freedom of the City on their father and grandfather Peter Barry, chairman of the famous tea brand.

He was honoured for his lifelong dedication to the service of his country, for his business acumen and philanthropic endeavours and in particular his work as Minister for Foreign Affairs in negotiating the Anglo Irish Agreement.
