The Department of Foreign Affairs says media reports about the expulsion of a security official at the Israeli embassy over the use of fake Irish passports by Mossad are speculation.

However, according to the Department the Minister for Foreign Affairs is due to bring a proposal to the Cabinet dealing with the matter.

Earlier the Taoiseach said that the Government is to decide soon on what action to take in relation to the use of forged Irish passports in the Dubai assassination of a Hamas leader.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen faced questions today about a leaked report into the use of forged Irish passports in the killing in Dubai earlier this year.

During Leaders' Questions in the Dáil this morning, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said the leaked report states clearly that a security official in the Israeli Embassy in Dublin was involved in this incident.

The official was linked in particular to the sourcing of numbers for the illegal use of Irish passports.

Mr Kenny asked the Taoiseach to confirm this information and if it was true that the report also recommended the expulsion of a security officer from the Israeli embassy and if it was the Government's intention to act on that matter swiftly.

Mr Cowen said the Government wanted this matter to get the attention it merits and did not want it to get mixed up with current events in Gaza.

He said that the intention of Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin is to propose to the Government the action he believes to be appropriate in this case.

Mr Cowen added that the Government is on record about the gravity with which it views the fraudulent use of Irish passports, or the details of Irish passports.
