O2 - Jobs boost announced

Telefónica, O2's parent company, is to create 100 new jobs by the end of next year with a new European People Services Centre in Dublin.

The centre will be located in O2's headquarters in Dublin's Docklands and represents an investment of €25m over five years.

The new operation will provide HR services, support functions and administration to the 27,900 Telefónica Europe employees, in their respective local languages.

Speaking at the announcement, IDA Chief Executive Barry O'Leary said there will be three significant jobs announcements to come in the next two weeks.

Mr O'Leary said one of the firms involved is a significant world leader with no activities here, he said another is a very specialist firm involved in internet activities and the third is a financial services company.

Commenting on the loss of jobs at Pfizer this week, Mr O'Leary said mergers and acquisitions at such firms would always affect jobs in Ireland, given the number of multi-national jobs located here.

However, he said Ireland had fared no worse than other countries when it came to the global job losses announced by the pharmaceutical firm.

Cork company to create 25 jobs

Green technology produced by Irish company Nualight, a leader in LED Lighting for food retail merchandising, is to be implemented across Tesco stores in the UK and USA.

The deal will be worth up to €5m to Nualight in 2010, growing by up to €10m by 2013.

On the back of the deal, Cork-based Nualight is to create 25 new jobs including graduate export positions to add to the 55 currently employed, with employment likely to grow to 80 in the next two years.
