At least one person has died in Kyrgyzstan after being shot during clashes between government supporters and backers of ousted leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

The clashes happened in the southern city of Jalalabad, the Health Ministry said.

A ministry spokesman said one person died after undergoing surgery for a severe gunshot wound and 37 were hospitalised.

Earlier, backers of Kyrgyzstan's interim government regained control of a key government building in the southern city of Osh a day after it was seized by opponents in what the authorities said was a coup attempt.

Interim government supporters took back the regional government headquarters building after scuffles with opponents.

Yesterday, protestors loyal to Mr Bakiyev had peacefully seized regional administration buildings in Osh and Jalalabad, and also in the town of Batken.

They also occupied the airports in Osh and Jalalabad.
