Night of bog and forest fires in west

Galway - Fire chiefs 'stretched to their limits' with blazes
Galway - Fire chiefs 'stretched to their limits' with blazes

Aftermath - Land scorched after fire

The west of Ireland has had one of its worst nights of bog and forest fires.

More than 100 firefighters were engaged in bringing more than 30 fires under control until 5.30am this morning.

The worst were in Drumshanbo and Arigna in Co Leitrim, Ballindine and Bangor Erris in Co Mayo, Lough Glane in Co Roscommon and Ballykeneally and Sylaune near Tuam in Co Galway.

Fire chiefs say they were stretched to their limits.

A fire that had been burning for five days near Oughterard in Co Galway was finally brought under control yesterday evening - but within hours fresh fires were blazing across all five Connacht counties.

Senior fire officers who directed last night's operations say it is clear that some of the fires were started deliberately.

They have again appealed to land owners to stop doing this as enormous damage is being caused and in some cases houses are being threatened.

Families living in the Moycullen area of Co Galway say they want a garda investigation into a fire that forced them to flee their homes in the early hours of yesterday morning.
