The Chairman of the Moriarty Tribunal, Mr Justice Michael Moriarty, has described criticisms of the Tribunal's work as a 'sustained attack' on its work.
In a surprise statement, Mr Justice Moriarty said he could not engage in media debate about criticisms which have been made about the good faith of the Tribunal and members of its legal team.
However, he said he wanted to make it clear that none of the criticisms would interfere with the discharge of his remit; nor would they deflect him from ensuring that fair procedures are adhered to in bringing his work to conclusion. Nor would they inhibit him from reporting without fear or favour.
He went on to say his report will be based on evidence heard at public hearings and not on unsworn speculation of allegations, from 'whatever source'.
Denis O'Brien, whose company was awarded the mobile phone contract at issue at the Tribunal, and Independent TD Michael Lowry, who was Minister at the time, have both been critical of the Tribunal.
