US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice has expressed concern over the situation in Sudan ahead of Sunday's first multi-party elections for more than two decades.
Speaking after a UN briefing, she said there were significant obstacles to overcome following the withdrawal of several opposition parties from the poll.
Ms Rice also said that a postponement of the elections might be the best course of action.
‘I think our view has been that if a very brief delay were decided to be necessary, and we thought that a brief delay would enable the process to be more credible, we would be prepared to entertain that,’ Ms Rice said.
However, Khartoum's UN ambassador Abdalmahmoud Abdalhaleem ruled out any delay to the process.
‘The government itself cannot do that and elections are not going to be delayed at all,’ he told reporters.
‘After all, these types of functions is the responsibility of the national electoral commission and not the government.’
