Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said there was a good atmosphere in his meeting with US President Barack Obama.

The two leaders 'met privately for approximately 1.5 hours, in a good atmosphere,' the office said in a statement.

It added that advisors to both men are holding follow-up discussions that will continue throughout the day.

The statement did not provide any further details on the talks, which were held last night at the White House.

The two leaders did not issue any statements before or after the meeting and unusually did not hold a news conference.

White House officials declined to describe the tone or the substance of the talks or to say if any agreements had been proposed or reached.

A diplomatic row between the two allies began earlier this month when Israel announced plans to construct 1,600 new settler homes in east Jerusalem.

The announcement came two days after the Palestinians agreed to indirect talks with Israel.

Mr Netanyahu began his Washington visit on Monday, declaring in an address to the influential pro-Israel lobby AIPAC that 'Jerusalem is not a settlement, it's our capital'.
