A conservation study has said that the High Crosses at Monasterboice are at immense risk.
The future of the crosses is now the subject of a public consultation which could result in them being moved from their present site.
For well over a thousand years, the High Crosses have been drawing pilgrims and visitors to Monasterboice in Co Louth.
A conservation study on the monastic site said the crosses are at immense risk of damage from the weather, vandalism, or just from visitors.
The study put forward a number of possible options for their future, which include doing nothing, building enclosures around them, or removing them from the site and replacing them with replicas.
To get as wide a range of opinions as possible, the study has now gone on display both locally and on the internet.
It is available on Louth Heritage website and locally in libraries, local authority offices, pubs and GAA clubs in the area.
Submissions have to be made to the Department of the Environment before the end of April.
The final decision is likely to be made by the Minister for the Environment.
