There was a strong increase in new car sales last month compared with the same period a year ago.

The Central Statistics Office said 11,707 new cars were licensed in the month, up 33% from a year earlier.

The number of new goods' vehicles licensed also jumped, increasing 36% to 1,494.

The figures are broadly in line with those issued by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry last week, which showed a 39% annual rise, though from a very low base in 2009.

The SIMI said the scrappage scheme introduced in the Budget had stimulated new business.

A breakdown of today's CSO figures showed that 58% of the new cars last month were diesel, while just under 37% were petrol.

Despite the negative publicity over recalls of its cars, Toyota led the way with 1,663 new cars in February, followed by Volkswagen with 1,460, Ford with 1,402 and Renault with 1,094.
